BeerUnion is a website dedicated to beer in New York City – the coolest events, most awesome bars and behind the scenes with the people who make it all happen.
Giancarlo and Sarah Annese started BeerUnion as a blog in 2009. Soon after, they were immersed in a community of bloggers, bar owners, brewers and homebrewers, and general beer enthusiasts doing some pretty cool stuff. BeerUnion.com is where they share that stuff with you.
In 2013 they spent four months traveling across New York State to research and write their first book, Beer Lover’s New York. It was published by Globe Pequot Press on February 11, 2014.
Giancarlo Annese, Co-founder, CEO
Giancarlo Annese graduated from Union College in 2008 with degrees in Classics and History. He went on to get his masters in Medieval History from Fordham University, where he happened upon a job in the financial aid department. He stayed on after graduate school and is now an Assistant Director of Financial Aid.
Giancarlo discovered a love for beer after drinking Anchorsteam during his senior year of college, then began homebrewing with several friends. They would frequent the local bottle shop and sample new and exciting craft beers. When he and Sarah moved to New York City he shared his passion for trying new styles with her and together they started exploring the city through craft beer.

Sarah Annese, Co-founder, Editor in Chief
Sarah graduated from Boston University in 2008 with a degree in English. She moved to New York City and started her career as a reporter, working for the historic Brooklyn Eagle newspaper. She is now a freelance writer and social media specialist. Some of you may know her as Sarah Tobol.
Sarah discovered beer, as most do, in college. Attending school in Boston, Harpoon was abundant. One afternoon at a local tavern her senior year, she tried UFO and was smitten. She drank only that until she and Giancarlo came to New York and went to the Burp Castle. The rest is history.
John Kleinchester, Homebrewing Columnist
An advocate of all things craft beer, John Kleinchester’s main focus is his website beertography.com. He writes articles, chronicles brewery trips and adventures in homebrewing as well as posting mouth-watering beer photos.
John’s day job is in television production, but his heart lies submerged in craft beer. He has volunteered at New Jersey and New York City breweries and aids in newjerseycraftbeer.com’s ongoing mission to spread the good word of beer across the Garden State. John has collaborated with Sixpoint Brewery on a 20-gallon batch for their Beer For Beasts charity event, and has won awards at the New York City Homebrewers Guild’s Homebrew Alley competition. He has donated and poured his homebrew at Get Real cask and draught events.
John has been a Cicerone Certified Beer Server since August 2011, currently pursuing his full Cicerone Certification.
