Beer freaks and beer geeks converged on Park Slope’s Southpaw this past Friday for the Fourth Annual Freaktoberfest, the official kick-off party for NY Craft Beer Week.
There was a lot of great beer with a few new highlights. Allagash brought Fluxus, their anniversary brew, which this year is a French farmhouse ale. It had great dark fruit flavors of plum and fig with some hop dryness. We were also impressed with the Stone 15th Anniversary Escondidian Dark Ale which was full of hop bitterness and dark roastiness.
We had the opportunity to revisit some of our favorite beers like, Greenport Harbor Black Duck Porter, Pretty Things Baby Tree, and Wandering Star Mild at Heart. There were also several beers launched at the party. The collaboration brews Freaktoberfest and Geektoberfest were launched along with Shmaltz’s 15th anniversary beer Genesis 15:15, a barrel aged barleywine brewed with pomegranates, figs, dates and grapes.
We also got the chance to chat with Josh Schnaffer, director of Craft Beer Week. He told us that he started it in part because he had been traveling a lot and went to beer events in other cities, and found that New York would be put down because it didn’t have anything similar.
“It’s really amazing how much craft beer has grown,” he said. “The best discussions happen over beers on a barstool.”
All in all, an awesome evening, with great beer, music, burlesque, and Donny Vomit.
