A lot is made of the comparative food pairing abilities of beer and wine. It is often noted by beer people that beer has enormous room for growth in the pairing department as more chefs and diners become aware of the merits of having quality beer with their food. Obviously this runs into the traditional territory of the wine world, well known for having talented sommeliers and the ubiquitous wine and cheese event.
The Tour de France restaurant group is taking advantage by bringing beer and wine pairings to their fifth annual winter cheese event on February 9 at 404 10th Ave. Beer sommelier Gianni Cavicchi, of Cafe D’Alsace, and wine sommelier Aviram Turgeman, of Nice Matin, will face off with head-to-head pairings. Guests will have a say in the verdict by voting throughout the event for their favorite pairings. Uinta Anniversary Barley Wine will challenge Vintage Port with Stilton and Cigar City Maduro Oatmeal Brown Ale will battle a white Burgundy over the Alsatian Muenster.
$38 gets you tastings from 7:30 to 10 p.m. while a $53 dollar VIP ticket will get you in at 6:30 p.m. for an extra hour of pairings. Tickets can be bought through Thrillist. If you can’t make the festival you can get a taste of it by visiting the restaurants in the Tour De France group who will be serving their cheeses beside beer and wine all week.
