Waterfront Ale House, Brooklyn and Manhattan

There are two Waterfront Ale Houses on the Good Beer Seal, one in Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill and another in the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan. Broooklyn Walking into the Waterfront Ale House Brooklyn location (which is really called Pete’s Ale House) you feel like you’re stepping back in time. Jazz music, art deco-ish decor, a vintage popcorn machine, even an old guy with thick rimmed glasses and straw hat sitting at the bar who looks like he’s been there since it opened. It all lends a certain charm to the place. The bar has a solid beer list of local…

R.I.P Monster, the Brooklyn Brewery Cat

Today we are saddened to learn that the Brooklyn Brewery’s cat, Monster, a New York beer icon in his own right, died of kidney failure at age 13. From the brewery’s blog: “Monster quickly became one of the most photographed objects in The Brewery, and aside from possibly Brewmaster Oliver has posed with more Brooklyn fans than any other member of the team.” We have no doubt that’s true. Every time we went to the brewery (or even walked passed it) we saw and snapped a photo of Monster. He definitely had a unique and memorable personality.

BeerUnion #beeradventure Update: We Finished!

Yesterday we conquered the hardest-to-reach bars on the Good Beer Seal list: Killmeyer’s Old Bavaria Inn and Adobe Blues, both on Staten Island, with the very generous help of our brother/brother-in-law Jake (seen previously in this post). After hours of driving, delicious beer and food, we sat at Adobe Blues, a little worse for wear, deliriously high-fiving each other. Because in week two, when we mapped out a schedule of bar visits, we seriously thought we might not make it. Forty-one bars is a lot of bars to go to in one month. So. If anyone is crazy enough to…

The Bronx Brewery Making Waves in NYC

It’s been an exciting several weeks for the Bronx Brewery. This past Monday, Union Beer Distributors began distributing their beer, which has been self-distributed by General Manager Chris Gallant and Head Brewer Damian Brown since the pair started the brewery last March. Last week the brewery was given the Entrepreneur of the Year award by New York City. And in this month’s issue of Beverage World, the magazine honored the brewery’s inaugural release, its Bronx Pale Ale, with its BevStar Bronze Award in beer, noting “there’s still an opportunity to make one’s mark within a classic, tried-and-true beer style segment.”…
