A sad toll of Hurricane Sandy was local businesses, including breweries. Brew York has been updating regularly about what’s been going on. Here is a roundup of some of the affects:
Barrier Brewing Co. in Oceanside, Long Island is “destroyed” according to the brewery’s Facebook page. They posted the photo below.
Brooklyn Brewery President Steve Hindy wrote in a blog post on the company’s website that though the Brewery in Williamsburg wasn’t affected, its distributor Phoenix/Beehive in Red Hook was flooded with five feet of water in its warehouse.
Sixpoint’s brewery in Red Hook was flooded with 4 feet of water. Photo below is from their Facebook page. Founder Shane Welch has met with FEMA.
Shmaltz’s Coney Island Brewing Company incurred some damage (seen in the photo below from their Facebook page). However, the brewery says, “This is truly nothing compared to what so many have lost.”
According to updates on Facebook, 508 Gastrobrewery was flooded. Owner Anderson Sant’Anna De Lima was looking for a gas powered water pump on Tuesday. All of the restaurant’s brewing equipment is in the basement.
The Bronx Brewery’s warehouse in the Bronx has some water in the basement, according to Brew York, and Cottrell Brewing Company in Connecticut, where the beer is made, is still without power.
Chelsea Brewing Company lost power.
The Greenport Harbor Brewery is in good condition. Simon Thorpe, CEO and President of Brewery Ommegang sent Greenport a pretty awesome email. Excerpt is below:
I had heard that you were impacted and I was trying to reach you yesterday.
I just wanted to say that if we can help we will. I have spare capacity here at Cooperstown; materials and ingredients; packing capacity; distribution capabilities etc etc. If you are unable to brew and any of that is of use to you I will gladly pitch in my team and our resources. Equally we have been working the phones trying to make contact with other breweries hit and if you know of anyone else who needs help then please could I ask you to let me know?
