Last night Beer Week kicked off with a party hosted by the NYC Brewers Guild at Galapagos Art Space in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Breweries in attendance included Brewers Guild members Brooklyn Brewery, 508 Gastrobrewery, the Bronx Brewery, KelSo, Heartland, Sixpoint, La Birreria, Shmaltz, Rockaway Brewing Company and Chelsea Brewing Company. The city brewers were joined by a bunch of other New York breweries including Peekskill, Captain Lawrence, Greenport, Empire, Ommegang, and Ithaca.
Here are some beer highlights: We were excited to see City Island Beer Company on hand with its Pale Ale (now there are three breweries operating out of the Bronx). Rockaway Brewing brought two of its newest beers, a classic styled IPA and a Scottish Ale. Peekskill Simple Sour was one of our favorites, with a light body but packing a solid sour punch, it was a welcome change of pace from some of the heavier winter beers we tried. Three Beans from Sixpoint, a deceptive 10% ABV baltic porter brewed with coffee, chocolate, and white beans, is one of the most innovative beers from the New York Brewers. Greenport Harbor brought its popular Otherside IPA (now a year-long release) and the Bronx Brewery was pouring its specialty release Black Pale Ale.
A sold out event, the bash was well-attended not only by beer fans, but also by brewers. Galapagos Art Space is a unique venue (it has an indoor lake), but the crowds were often uncomfortable.
Entertainment was great, provided by Scott Metzger’s WOLF! and Scot Metzger & Friends. 508 Gastrobrewery’s Chris Cuzme even joined in on the sax.
Food was available from the Munchies Food Truck which was parked across the street and offered up burgers and fried snacks. The burgers were awesome, the perfect thing to eat during a night of drinking.
All in all a great party (though with so many high ABV beers, we would have loved if there was food actually inside), a great start to Beer Week!
