508 GastroBrewery and Spider Bite Beer Co.

On Tuesday 508 GastroBrewery released a collaboration beer, the Gastrobite Black Wheat Saison, brewed with Spider Bite Beer Company. “Larry Goldstein and Paul Kretzer are great! ” says 508 Brewer Chris Cuzme, who took over as brewmaster of the Tribeca brewpub in November. “We had a blast brewing this beer, especially since of all my collaborations (thus far) these guys are the first to come in that generally brew on a smaller system than I do (with the exception of their very large batches).  And I only yield 50 gallons at a time! So it was very fun to share the little…

Newburgh Takes Over the Taps at Bierkraft

Bierkraft’s Thursday tap takeover this week will feature one of New York’s most exciting young breweries, Newburgh Brewing Co. Just up the Hudson River, Newburgh has brewed 17 styles since opening in 2012. Many are hard or impossible to find in the city and require a trip up to the brewery to imbibe. You can save yourself the trip this week because Bierkraft is putting 14 Newburgh beers on draft and two on cask. While they are all worth trying you won’t want to miss the C.A.F.E. Sour or the Paper Box Pale Ale on cask dry hopped with Sorachi…

Beer Lover’s New York

Sometimes, amazing things happen. We are writing a book. It’s called “Beer Lover’s New York” and it’s part of the Beer Lover’s series published by Globe Pequot Press, which already includes Colorado, Oregon and New England. The book is a guide to beer in New York State, broken down by region. Each region will include breweries, brewpubs and bars. The book will also feature recipes for homebrews and foods made with beer in mind. We’re traveling across New York (all the way to Southern Tier) from now to August, on weekends and holidays. We’d love for you to email us…

Bierkraft Belatedly Celebrates 11 years with Barrier

Barrier Brewing Company may have been the hardest hit member of the New York beer community when Hurricane Sandy devastated the area last November. Amazingly, the brewery got back on its feet in a matter of months and even found time to brew the collaborative 11th anniversary beer with Brooklyn’s popular bar, bottle and sandwich shop Bierkraft that was originally slated to be released in the fall. In keeping with the creativity of both Barrier and Bierkraft the beer will be a smoked berliner weisse (a German sour style) perfect for the warm weather. The beer will be available tonight, May…

Session IPAs

IPAs have been on a tear in the craft beer community for the past few years. Hoppy IPAs can be great summer brews with floral aromas and crisp bitterness. The intense bitterness in IPAs or other hoppy beers is often accompanied by higher alcohol content from using more grain to help balance the beers out. Many breweries have an imperial version and they can be among the most highly touted beers around – think Pliny from Russian River or 120 Minute from Dogfish Head. They can be delicious but also intensely boozy with ABVs in the double digits. A new…

“Beer Balls” Meatball and Craft Beer Festival

The team at Get Real is back this weekend with their Beer Balls festival at Alewife NYC. The festival features tastings from 30 different breweries and a mini cask ale bar. Attendees will get 10 meatball dishes to pair up with the brews. Tickets are $40 and the two sessions run from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
