Brooklyn Takes American Craft Brewing to Sweden

March 27 marked the culmination of a partnership between Carlsberg Sweden and Brooklyn Brewery: Nya Carnegiebryggeriet – a new craft brewery in Sweden. “Since our company’s founding, we’ve always looked outward. Steve Hindy and I both discovered beer while traveling abroad. The Ottaways grew up in far-flung places around the globe. And in Sweden we’ve found a real community that has welcomed us with open arms. It’s only natural that we partner with our friends here to create a new chapter in brewing,” says Brooklyn’s Brewmaster Garrett Oliver in a press release. A subsidiary of Brooklyn Brewery will operate Nya Carnegiebryggeriet, which…

SingleCut Beersmiths

This past Saturday we continued our Beer Lover’s New York book tour at SingleCut Beersmiths in Astoria, Queens. Opened in December of 2012 by Rich Buceta, SingleCut is a 30-barrel brewhouse that specializes in lager production. Its taproom is open Thursday through Sunday (hours here), and it’s a fun and relaxing place to enjoy some brews and food (savory pies, anyone?). We had a great time at SingleCut. Big thanks to General Manager Amanda Mayer for helping us organize this event, and for being so awesome by offering everyone who bought a book a free pint of the Keith English…

For $10 (reserve your spot here and pay at the bar) you’ll get four SingleCut beers, tater tots, and a shot of whiskey. Pretty good deal. Bavaria Bierhaus, Financial District

Manhattan’s Financial District hasn’t always been the best place to sit down and imbibe some craft beer in the after-work hours, but recently a spate of bars have cropped up, particularly along Stone Street. Bavaria Bierhaus, which opened this past December, is one of them. Bavaria Bierhaus is a Lower-Manhattan destination for German beer and food. It’s under the same ownership as nearby Beckett’s and the Dubliner: partners Noel McDermott, David Massey, Ronan Downs, and Eamon Massey. The tap and bottle list spans includes Pilsners, Hefeweiens, Dunkels and Bocks. The beers are supported by a creative and tasty menu imagined…

Long Ireland Beer Company

This past weekend we went on the first stop of our brewery tour promoting our book Beer Lover’s New York. We spent Saturday afternoon at Long Ireland Beer Company in Riverhead, NY, on Long Island. Had some great beers and good beery conversation. Long Ireland was started by Dan Burke and Greg Martin in 2009. They interned at New England Brewing Company before venturing out on their own, first contracting at New England and then Olde Saratoga. An expansion in 2010 allowed the pair to start brewing in their Riverhead location. Popular brews include the Celtic Ale, Breakfast Stout and…

Nostrand Avenue Pub, Crown Heights

By Meredith Heil On today’s Brooklyn streets, a bar is born every minute. To help navigate this ever-widening sea of suds, I’ve developed a checklist that outlines all the qualities necessary for a joint to be considered not just a good, but a great neighborhood bar. – A relaxed, no pressure atmosphere. I’ll pass on the fancy shots and bottle service in favor of comfy booths, mellow tunes and toned down décor. – A solid draft list. I’m talking quality over quantity here – I’d much rather see 10 creatively curated, diverse selections than 50 big name hop bombs of…
