Coney Island On Tap Coming Up July 12

“There is a vibrant market for craft beer in Brooklyn and we wanted to be a part of Coney Island’s comeback from the extensive damage the area suffered during Hurricane Sandy,” says A.J. Bodden, Managing Director of Townsquare Lifestyle Events. On July 12, Townsquare will hold its inaugural New York City event, Coney Island On Tap.  The event will take place at MCU Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, just steps from the Coney Island boardwalk and beach. Attendees will have the opportunity to taste over 100 beers from more than 60 American craft breweries. Just some of the New York breweries that…

Beach Party Summer Can Jam at Covenhoven

Now that it is officially summer, Crown Heights’ new bottle shop Covenhoven is celebrating with a Beach Party Summer Can Jam, hosted by our friends over at The Beerded Ladies. On Saturday, June 28 the shop will be serving $3 cans of beers from brewers like Oskar Blues, Sixpoint, and Two Roads, like the classic Dale’s Pale Ale from Oskar Blues or No Limits Hefeweizen from Two Roads. If the good forecast for Saturday’s weather holds up, it should be a perfect day to enjoy those cans outside on the shop’s back patio.

Breukelen Bier Merchants, Williamsburg

By  Meredith Heil On Saturdays, I lead organized pub crawls of Williamsburg for the suds-centric walking tour company, Urban Oyster. Each bar along the boozy 3-hour traipse represents a different slice of the craft beer pie, from the 25-tap hipster cave known as Barcade, to Mugs, which could best be described as “Cheers” with a killer draft list. Yet while all the beer dens we visit are beautiful snowflakes in their own right, my absolute favorite has to be stop number three: Breukelen Bier Merchants.  Named for the traditional Dutch spelling of Brooklyn, Grand Street’s Breukelen Bier Merchants is the…

The Owl Farm Anniversary Blowout

This Saturday, June 21, starting at 8 a.m., The Owl Farm  Bar in Park Slope will host a party for its second anniversary. From the event page on Facebook: “We’re pulling out all the stops and we want you to share in the fun. We’ll be opening at 8 a.m. with an array of breakfast beers, we’ll be debuting our new collaboration with Barrier Brewing Co. We’ll have fancy beer and shot combos and rare bottles by the glass. Amy Benfer of Brooklyn Vinyl will be managing the music.”  The preliminary beer list looks pretty amazing. Among the breakfast beers…

Watch the World Cup

The World Cup kicks off Thursday so this weekend will be your first opportunity to watch international soccer all day (unless you’re not working Thursday and Friday, in which case your soccer drinking can start then). People from all over the world live in NYC, so it makes sense that we’d have plenty of places to watch the games over a pint. Here are some great bars to catch a match with some craft beer: Woodwork, 583 Vanderbilt Avenue Brooklyn Banter, 132 Havemeyer Street, Brooklyn Kent Ale House, 51 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn Bronx Ale House, 216 West 238th Street, Bronx…

NYC Good Beer Passport and Giveaway

July is coming up soon (how did that happen?) and that means the sixth annual Good Beer Month in NYC. Founded by Jimmy Carbone, Good Beer Month, along with the Good Beer Seal, aims to identify the best places to get craft beer, and produce events that celebrate it. The Seal marks bars throughout the five boroughs of New York City – as well as Jersey City and Long Island – that have good selections of craft beer, are small and independently owned, and show a commitment to craft beer advocacy. Check out highlights from last year’s Good Beer Month…

Animal Rescue Fundraiser at Glorietta Baldy

On Sunday, June 8 from 2 to 7 p.m., Bed-Stuy bar Glorietta Baldy will host a fundraiser for Sean Casey Animal Rescue. One dollar for every $4 Narragansett pint will be donated to Sean Casey. An adoption van will be parked out front for attendees to give direct dontaions. Glorietta Baldy is the fourth bar from the Wiley Brothers, which include Bar Great Harry, Mission Dolores and The Owl Farm. It opened in 2013 in a neighborhood where great craft beer bars had been hard to find.

Pilsner Urquell Dinner at Brooklyn Kitchen

Given the nature of what we do around here, we often get to do some fun things. Our book and book tour, for instance. But every now and then we’re invited to something that’s so wonderfully out of the ordinary that we’re looking at each other thinking, this is bonkers. Such was the case last month, when the fine folks at Pilsner Urquell asked us if we’d like to attend a beer dinner and butchering demonstration at The Brooklyn Kitchen with The Meat Hook. Um, yes. Meat Hook founder Tom Mylan has just come out with a book, aptly titled…
