Building a Brewery From Scratch

“People want to see hard work, they don’t want to see a new brewery show up. They want to see something that grew from a seed,” says Rich Castagna, founder, owner and brewer of Bridge and Tunnel Brewery in Queens. This philosophy could not be more true in his case. Castagna and his family have…

“Beer Here” Exhibition at New-York Historical Society

When you imagine an exhibit at a historical society, you might picture some manuscripts, dusty old artifacts, and many many books. With the New-York Historical Society’s “Beer Here: Brewing New York’s History” exhibit, however, you couldn’t be more wrong. Opening tomorrow, the exhibition is an in-depth look at three centuries of the production and consumption of beer in New York City, shown through colorful advertisements, maps, beer cans and bottles, production equipment, water pipes (yikes!) and even a dress worn by Miss Rheingold 1956 (donated by Miss Rheingold herself). The exhibit is split into eight sections (the final section, you’ll be…

A Visit to Keegan Ales

This weekend we visited our good friends Rhinebeck, and while we were there spent an afternoon at the Keegan Ales brewery in Kingston, about a 20-minute drive away. Greeted by a friendly bartender and patrons, we sampled a flight of all the Keegan beers: Old Capital, Hurricane Kitty, Mother’s Milk,  Joe Mama’s Milk and Black Eye. Mother’s Milk (a milk stout brewed with lactose sugar) is a consistent beer we have enjoyed before. Jo Mama’s Milk is Mother’s Milk brewed with coffee and brown sugar (it tastes almost like a milkshake). We really liked this beer – the coffee flavor was great…

10 Breweries in NYC Combine to Form Guild

Well this is an exciting announcement. New York City breweries Bronx Brewery, Brooklyn Brewery, Chelsea Brewing Co., Eataly Birreria, Harlem Brewing Co., Heartland Brewing Co., KelSo Beer Company, Shmaltz Brewing Co., Sixpoint Brewery and 508 GastroBrewery have combined to form the New York City Brewers Guild (NYCBG), with a mission to “advance the local brewing industry and thereby lessen human misery.” There will be a founders bash to celebrate this collaboration on May 22 at the Brooklyn Brewery. It will be an evening of rare and obscure beers from each of the 10 inaugural brewers. The Guild will also be taking…

An Insider’s Look at Harpoon Brewery

A few weeks ago we went to Boston. Part of our trip included a tour of Harpoon Brewery with our good friend and beer scientist, Mike, who works in the lab. We were excited for the tour, for obvious reasons, but also because we view Harpoon as one of the most consistent breweries in the Northeast. From brewing and fermenting to kegging and bottling, the brewery has an impressive operation. The beer, of course, was the best part. We had the chance to try a barrel aged common, a pepper corn saison, and some super fresh IPA out of the…

Inside ‘The World’s Smallest Brewery’

On Saturday we went to Coney Island to check out the Coney Island Brewing Company (an outpost of Shmaltz Brewing). Upon getting out of the subway with crowds of people into the blistering heat, we began to rethink our decision to venture to Coney on a Saturday in the summer… but we were there. Heat and crowds be damned. After a Nathan’s hot dog (obligatory) and a stroll on the boardwalk (also obligatory), we found the brewery in a small storefront next to the Freak Show and chatted with brewer Eby Harvey about the operation. Shmaltz beers are brewed upstate,…
